Our Take
Pandemic is a cooperative board game for two to four players in which the group works together to contain and cure four deadly diseases spreading across a world map. Designed by Matt Leacock and published by Z-Man Games, it's a staple gateway game for families and adults stepping into hobby board gaming, sitting firmly in the mid-market.
Key Features
Cooperative play only — all players win or lose together, no elimination mechanic
Supports two to four players, with games typically running 45–60 minutes
Seven distinct character roles (Medic, Scientist, Dispatcher, etc.), each with a unique special ability
Modular difficulty via an Epidemic card system — four, five, or six Epidemic cards adjusts the challenge
Includes a large, detailed world map board with 48 cities across six continents
Wooden pawns and plastic disease cubes in four colours represent character positions and outbreak severity
Our Verdict
Pandemic is an excellent first cooperative game for families with older children (10+) or adult friend groups new to hobby gaming. It's well-made, accessible, and genuinely compelling. Those who've already clocked significant hours with it should look straight to an expansion rather than repurchasing the base game.
