How to Clean and Care for LEGO Bricks Without Ruining Them
The safe answer is refreshingly simple: hand-wash ordinary loose LEGO bricks in water no hotter than 40°C, use a soft cloth or sponge, and let them dry naturally out of direct sun. Skip the tempting shortcuts. Heat, appliances and prolonged soaking of vulnerable parts can turn a clean-up into permanent damage.

Whether you have bought a second-hand tub, uncovered an older set in the loft or simply need to deal with years of dust, start by sorting what can safely go in water from what cannot. Ordinary plastic bricks are one group. Electronics, metal-containing elements, stickered parts and printed elements need more restraint.
The rule worth remembering
Keep the water below 40°C. LEGO’s own care guidance says that hotter water may affect brick quality. Once a brick gets very hot, it can change shape and no longer work as intended.
How to hand-wash LEGO bricks safely
For standard loose bricks, plates and similar all-plastic elements, use a basin or bowl of water no hotter than 40°C. Clean each piece with a soft cloth or sponge. This is the method LEGO recommends, and it is deliberately low-tech for good reason.
If the bricks are grimy rather than merely dusty, you can add a mild detergent to the water. Once cleaned, rinse the pieces well with clear water so that detergent is not left behind. Keep the job manageable by working in small batches, particularly if you are cleaning a mixed second-hand collection with plenty of small elements.
Use lukewarm water, not hot water
The ceiling is 40°C. Do not assume hotter water will clean better; LEGO specifically warns that higher temperatures can affect the bricks.

Rinse after using detergent
Mild detergent is permitted, but LEGO says to rinse the pieces thoroughly with clear water afterwards.
What not to do when cleaning LEGO
There are several common “bulk cleaning” ideas that are best avoided entirely. LEGO says not to put its pieces in a washing machine or dishwasher. Neither is a controlled hand-wash, and both can expose parts to conditions that the manufacturer does not recommend.
The same goes for using an oven, microwave or hair dryer to speed up drying. These are not harmless time-savers. LEGO explicitly warns against all three. If bricks become very hot, they may distort and stop fitting or functioning properly.

Sunlight deserves special attention with older collections. Keeping pieces out of direct sun is therefore as much about long-term appearance as it is about drying them safely.
Be especially cautious with printed parts and elements carrying stickers. The same guide warns that water exposure can lift the edges of older stickers or fade certain printing inks. Treat these as wipe-clean pieces rather than adding them automatically to a washing batch.
Dry LEGO naturally and out of the sun
After rinsing, place the bricks somewhere indoors and away from direct sunlight to dry naturally. Resist the urge to introduce heat. LEGO’s warning about ovens, microwaves and hair dryers applies just as much after washing as it does during it.
Before putting bricks away or rebuilding with them, check that no water remains trapped inside an element. This matters most with pieces that have enclosed spaces or complex shapes. A little patience here is preferable to sealing damp parts into storage.
Cleaning electronic and metal-containing LEGO pieces
Do not submerge electronic components or pieces containing metal. LEGO’s guidance is more specific for these elements: clean them only with a cloth moistened with water and a mild detergent that is free from perfume or oil.
Keep the cloth damp, not dripping. For electronic and metal-containing pieces, the instruction is to wipe with a moistened cloth rather than wash them in a basin. Separate these elements before you begin cleaning a mixed collection.
This is also the sensible point to slow down when working through a used lot. If you are unsure whether an element includes metal or electronics, do not treat it as an ordinary washable brick.
Storing LEGO so it stays cleaner for longer
Once clean and dry, keep LEGO away from direct sunlight. That is particularly important for vintage white and light-grey parts, where UV-related yellowing cannot simply be washed away.
For sealed or collector-focused vintage sets, the aim is a stable, low-humidity environment out of sunlight. The useful takeaway is consistency: avoid storing prized sets where changing light and damp conditions can affect both parts and packaging over time.
That does not mean every loose tub needs museum treatment. It does mean avoiding sunny windowsills and places prone to moisture. If the box matters to you as much as the model, give the packaging the same protection from light and humidity swings.
Used and vintage LEGO: clean conservatively
Used ordinary bricks can follow the same official hand-washing method: water no hotter than 40°C, a soft cloth or sponge, mild detergent if required, and a thorough rinse. The extra work lies in sorting before you wash, not in making the wash more aggressive.
With a vintage set, separate stickered, printed, electronic and metal-containing pieces first. Cleaning can remove grime; it should not be expected to reverse UV damage.
Collectors may come across restoration methods involving hydrogen peroxide, often described as “retrobrighting”. LEGO does not provide official guidance for that process. It is not part of the manufacturer’s cleaning advice, so it should not be confused with the safe, supported hand-wash method above.
Should you clean loose bricks or a built model?
Loose ordinary bricks are the clearest case for hand-washing because you can sort out the parts that need special treatment before water is involved. With a completed display model, first identify whether it includes stickered, printed, electronic or metal-containing elements. Those parts should not be handled as standard submerged bricks.
For a dusty assembled model, begin with the least invasive option: wipe accessible ordinary surfaces with a soft cloth. If deeper cleaning is necessary, disassembling enough to separate the washable plastic elements from the vulnerable pieces gives you more control and keeps the official care guidance easy to follow.
