What happened and when
Insomniac Games rolled out patch v1.005.000 for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 on 28 July 2026, covering both the PS5 version and the Nixxes Software PC port — which moves to v2.727.0.0 on that platform. The update delivers four additions: native Enhanced PSSR support for PS5 Pro, a Power Saver mode for all PS5 consoles, the Fresh Start suit, and the Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls suit. Both outfits are free to all existing owners on PS5 and PC — no purchase required.

Insomniac confirmed the contents via X on 28 July 2026, stating:
"Update 1.005.000 adds two new suits for Peter Parker, including the Fresh Start suit (inspired by Spider-Man: Brand New Day) and the MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls suit. We also add support for enhanced PSSR for PS5 Pro and Power Saver mode for PS5 consoles."
Enhanced PSSR: what it means on PS5 Pro
Before this patch, Spider-Man 2 on PS5 Pro relied on the console's system-wide PSSR toggle — a generic fallback that doesn't account for a game's specific render pipeline. With v1.005.000, Insomniac has integrated support natively, allowing the upscaler to be tuned directly to Spider-Man 2's own rendering setup.
The underlying technology is Sony's Multi Frame Super Resolution 2 (MFSR2), which analyses an array of past scene states rather than only the current frame. Sony describes the result as offering "more precise image reconstruction, improved motion stability, and greater flexibility to balance performance and fidelity on PS5 Pro." The architecture stems from Sony's Project Amethyst co-development programme with AMD; Sony confirmed that "the algorithm and neural network used in the new PSSR stem from our Project Amethyst partnership with AMD."
Early player impressions report a cleaner picture and less blur during fast movement, though Insomniac has not published specific resolution or frame-rate targets for this mode. The practical size of the improvement remains unquantified until independent technical analysis arrives. It is worth noting that Insomniac's own patch notes call the feature "Enhanced PSSR" — the "PSSR 2.0" label does not appear in official materials.
Spider-Man 2 is not the first game to receive this treatment. Resident Evil Requiem was the first title to ship with native Enhanced PSSR at launch, and a March 2026 system software update extended support to Monster Hunter Wilds, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill f, and others. Nearly three years into its lifecycle, Spider-Man 2 now joins that list.
The two free suits
The Fresh Start suit takes its design from Tom Holland's Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day — a classic comic-book look featuring large, visible web shooters on the wrists. Insomniac had signalled this suit's arrival roughly a month before the patch landed, timed to coincide with the film's release. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opens in UK cinemas today, 29 July 2026 — the UK is among the first countries to screen it ahead of its global release on 31 July. The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo, among others.
One caveat: early reports indicate the Fresh Start suit is exhibiting a visual glitch in some scenes, with Peter's hair clipping through the mask and the blues on the suit appearing mismatched. No fix had been announced at time of writing.
The Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls suit was a surprise shadow-drop, unannounced before the patch went live. It sports a cel-shaded, anime-inflected aesthetic matching the visual style of Arc System Works' upcoming 4v4 tag-team fighter, published by Sony Interactive Entertainment — a look that sits in striking contrast to Spider-Man 2's photorealistic New York. The cross-promotion runs both ways: players who purchase the Ultimate Edition of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls will receive an Advanced Suit 2.0 costume inspired by Spider-Man 2. Tōkon itself is due to launch on 6 August 2026 for PS5 and PC, with Spider-Man among 20 characters on the launch roster.
Both suits appear directly in the wardrobe once the update is installed — no additional steps required.
Power Saver mode and platform context
All PS5 owners — not just Pro users — gain a new Power Saver mode with this patch. The feature has been gradually rolling out across first-party PlayStation titles over the past year, allowing games to run normally while drawing less power from the console. Insomniac has not specified which resolution or performance settings are reduced when the mode is active.
In terms of the game's broader lifecycle, ComicBook.com notes there is a reasonable chance this could be the final update Marvel's Spider-Man 2 ever receives. The game has sold over 11 million units to date. Insomniac's next release, Marvel's Wolverine, is currently scheduled for 15 September 2026 — and it too will receive a crossover suit from Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
What UK buyers should know
For context on hardware pricing: the PS5 Pro currently retails at £789.99 in the UK following a price rise on 2 April 2026. The standard PS5 with disc drive sits at £569.99, and the Digital Edition at £519.99. The patch itself costs nothing — existing owners on PS5 and PC simply need to install the update.
- PS5 Pro owners get native Enhanced PSSR — the first time Spider-Man 2 has fully used the Pro's upscaling hardware
- All PS5 and PC players get two free suits and, on PS5, a new Power Saver option
- Exact performance gains from Enhanced PSSR are unconfirmed; independent testing is needed before drawing firm conclusions
- The Fresh Start suit has a known visual bug with no announced fix as yet
Why it matters
For the £789.99 PS5 Pro, this patch is a meaningful justification: Spider-Man 2 is one of PlayStation's flagship titles, and native Enhanced PSSR means it now draws on the Pro's full upscaling capability rather than a generic system toggle. On a 4K 120Hz OLED with HDMI 2.1 VRR, the improvement should be tangible — particularly during fast traversal across New York. Standard PS5 owners aren't left out either, gaining two free cosmetic suits and a Power Saver mode at no cost. The absence of official resolution or frame-rate figures from Insomniac does make it harder to quantify the gain, so buyers weighing up a PS5 Pro upgrade should wait for independent technical analysis before drawing firm conclusions.
