GTA 6 Pre-Orders Open as 19 November PS5 Launch Approaches

Grand Theft Auto VI goes on sale in under eleven weeks, and between stock shortages, code-in-box controversy and record-breaking pre-orders, there is plenty to know before you hand over your money.

What you need to know

  • GTA 6 launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; UK pre-orders are live now
  • Standard Edition costs £69.99; Ultimate Edition (digital only) costs £89.99
  • Physical copies contain a download code — no disc, no resale, no lending
  • PS5 Pro is sold out at almost every UK third-party retailer ahead of the launch

Grand Theft Auto VI is due to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026, and pre-orders are now live across every major UK retailer. With the game less than eleven weeks away, demand has already pushed console stock to breaking point and reignited a familiar debate about what a "physical" game actually means in 2026.

GTA 6 launches exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026 — there is no PS4, no Nintendo version and no confirmed PC release date.

Pre-orders: where, when and what you get

Pre-orders opened at midnight BST on 25 June 2026 via the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store, Amazon UK, Argos and GAME. Anyone who pre-orders — or buys the game before 20 November 2026 — will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack as a bonus. Digital pre-orders also include one month of GTA+ membership, though Rockstar has confirmed that the subscription rolls into a paid plan automatically unless cancelled through account settings before the next billing date.

UK pricing is confirmed as £69.99 for the Standard Edition and £89.99 for the Ultimate Edition, which adds bonus in-game content and two exclusive side missions. The Ultimate Edition is digital-only. For context, GTA 5 launched at £39.99 on PS3 in 2013 — roughly £62 in today's money — so the gap is real, but narrower than the headline figures might suggest. That said, at £69.99 this remains one of the most expensive standard-edition launches in UK console history for a mainline title.

The physical edition: a box with no disc

Rockstar has confirmed that physical copies of GTA 6 will not contain a disc. In its own statement, the studio said: "Physical copies of GTAVI will contain a code that can be redeemed for the digital download of the game. A disc will not be included in the box."

Take-Two's press release added that physical copies — covering the Standard Edition only — will be available from 12 November 2026, a week before launch, specifically to allow players to pre-load the game ahead of the midnight unlock on 19 November. GTA 6 is due to use a rolling midnight launch, unlocking at 12:00 AM local time in each region.

The practical consequences for buyers are significant. A code-in-box copy cannot be resold, lent to a friend, or installed without an internet connection, making it functionally identical to buying digitally — just with a cardboard box and a higher street price. Some independent retailers have already said they will refuse to stock code-in-box products because they are cut out of the pre-owned resale market, which has historically been a key revenue stream for smaller shops.

Console demand surges — PS5 Pro stock almost gone

The run-up to launch has triggered an extraordinary surge in console sales. According to Nielsen IQ, UK PS5 sales jumped 33 per cent last week, while Xbox Series S and X sales leapt 34 per cent. GTA 6 pre-orders reportedly jumped by 436 per cent in a single day following a Netflix deep dive into the game, which 31.1 million people watched.

The PS5 Pro has borne the brunt of that demand. As of Wednesday 2 September, the console is sold out across almost every major UK third-party retailer. Sony's PlayStation Direct website remains one of the few places with available stock. The situation has been compounded by a March 2026 price increase on the PS5 Pro, though that hike appears to have done little to dampen appetite ahead of a GTA launch.

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will include PS5 Pro enhancements, though no specific details have been announced. The game is unlikely to hit 60fps even on the Pro model, according to technical analysts who have reviewed available footage.

A long time coming: the delay history

The November launch is GTA 6's third target date. When Rockstar released its first trailer in December 2023, the game was confirmed for a 2025 window. On 2 May 2025, the studio announced the first delay, pushing the date to 26 May 2026. A second slip followed on 6 November 2025, shifting the release to 19 November 2026.

In that announcement, Rockstar said: "We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve."

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told Variety ahead of that delay: "In this instance, of course, we're seeking to release the most extraordinary title anyone's ever seen in the history of entertainment. That's a tall order. And in this instance, Rockstar Games believes a limited amount of additional time is required for polish to support that view."

What's not confirmed — and what to watch

  • PC version: Expected, but Rockstar has announced no date. Based on the studio's history with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, a PC release — if it comes — would likely arrive a year or more after the console launch.
  • GTA 6 Online: Rockstar has described the game as a single-player experience at launch. As of 15 July 2026, no GTA 6 Online launch date has been announced.
  • Regulatory scrutiny: UK regulators are watching closely. The UK Gambling Commission is conducting an active review of in-game purchasing mechanics, running in parallel with a $58.4 million enforcement action in Brazil against Valve, Riot and EA over loot-box design. Given GTA Online's monetisation track record, Rockstar is likely to face regulator attention from launch day onwards.

The bottom line: if you want to play GTA 6 at launch, you need a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and you need to move quickly on both hardware and pre-orders. The Vintage Vice City Pack deadline is 20 November 2026 — the day after launch — so there is no great rush on the bonus, but console stock is a different matter entirely.

Why it matters

For most UK buyers, GTA 6 forces an immediate decision about hardware: there is no PS4 version, no Nintendo version, and a PC release — while expected — has no confirmed date and almost certainly will not arrive in 2026. Anyone without a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S who wants to play at launch needs to act now, particularly given that PS5 Pro stock has effectively collapsed at third-party retailers. The £69.99 standard price is also one of the highest ever charged for a mainline console game in the UK, and buyers choosing the physical edition should understand that the box contains only a download code — it cannot be resold, lent or traded in, making it functionally identical to a digital purchase.
