Rockstar teases GTA 6 'Extended Look' ahead of November launch

Rockstar Games has announced that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix on Thursday 27 August 2026 at 3 p.m. ET — that's 8 p.m. BST for UK viewers — before becoming available on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website six hours later at 9 p.m. ET (2 a.m. BST on 28 August). The announcement, made via a Rockstar press release on 6 August, marks the first time a major GTA reveal has debuted on a streaming platform before reaching Rockstar's own channels.

What exactly is the 'Extended Look'?

Rockstar has not described the presentation as a third trailer, and the company has not confirmed its runtime, format or contents. What is confirmed is the title — Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look — and the two-stage release schedule above. Take-Two Interactive chief executive Strauss Zelnick offered a flavour of what to expect when he told Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier in a YouTube interview on 7 August that the Extended Look "will feel like watching a Netflix show." Beyond that, the studio is staying tight-lipped.

Netflix, for its part, called the deal "a first-of-its-kind partnership to premiere an extended look at the next evolution in the groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto series." Zelnick was equally bullish when addressing analysts, saying: "We're excited for everyone to see an extended look of Grand Theft Auto 6. I'm not prepared to tell you how it's going to go, but I feel really good about it."

He was careful to frame 27 August as just the beginning, describing it to GamesIndustry.biz as merely "one of the hors d'oeuvres" for the wider marketing campaign ahead of launch.

Why Netflix first?

Rockstar drove the decision, according to Zelnick. "I think Rockstar felt that a Netflix release would be a great way to show off the extended trailer," he told IGN, adding that the content will subsequently reach "many other outlets." He also called Netflix "a great marketing partner and distribution partner" in comments to analysts — though the financial terms of the arrangement have not been disclosed.

For subscribers who cannot wait, the six-hour Netflix window is the price of admission. For everyone else, YouTube is free — just not until the early hours of Friday morning in the UK.

GTA 6 release date, platforms and editions

Rockstar has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no version for PS4 or Xbox One, and no PC release has been announced. Based on Rockstar's history with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, a PC port could follow eventually — but nothing is officially confirmed.

Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026. A digital preload is due to begin on 12 November 2026. UK pricing breaks down as follows:

• Standard Edition — £69.99: Available physically (box with download code) or digitally on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
• Ultimate Edition — £89.99: Digital only. Includes an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel and in-game items threaded across Jason and Lucia's story.

All pre-orders placed before 20 November 2026 will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack — a bundle of items referencing GTA: Vice City. Digital pre-orders also unlock a free month of GTA+, which grants access to GTA Online and classic Rockstar titles at no extra cost.

UK retailers confirmed for pre-orders include Amazon UK, Very, Argos, Currys, ShopTo and The Game Collection.

The physical edition problem

Buyers expecting a disc in that physical box will be disappointed. Rockstar has confirmed that the launch physical edition contains only a download code. The company told customers in a support email that a proper disc-based edition will be available "during the following months." Polish outlet PPE.pl has reported, via a leaker, that a disc edition could arrive in December 2026 — roughly one month after release — but Rockstar and Take-Two have not officially confirmed any date for it.

What about the price?

At £69.99, the Standard Edition sits at the top of the current UK AAA bracket. Zelnick has argued publicly that game prices have underperformed inflation for a decade, and the numbers offer some support: GTA V launched at £39.99 on PS3 in 2013, which equates to roughly £62 in today's money. The gap is real, but narrower than the headline figures suggest. Notably, Zelnick has also said that the £89.99 Ultimate Edition is outselling the Standard Edition despite the premium price and some controversy around it.

What to watch out for if you're buying

• No Netflix subscription? You'll be waiting until 2 a.m. BST on 28 August for the YouTube premiere — set an alarm or catch up the next day.
• Still on PS4 or Xbox One? GTA 6 will not run on last-gen hardware. A PS5 currently retails at around £449 in the UK.
• Buying physical? The launch box contains a code, not a disc. If a disc matters to you, the situation is unresolved officially.
• Black Friday timing: The 19 November launch falls a week before Black Friday — potentially worth keeping in mind if you're also considering a console purchase.
• Pre-order deadline: The Vintage Vice City Pack requires a purchase or pre-order before 20 November 2026.

The Extended Look on 27 August will be the clearest signal yet of what Rockstar has spent 13 years building — the same stretch of time, as the company has noted, since GTA V first arrived. Whether it justifies the price, the wait and the Netflix subscription is a question that will start to be answered in less than a fortnight.
