PS5 Pro Sells Out as GTA 6 Extended Look Ignites Demand
A 26-minute Netflix exclusive preview of Grand Theft Auto VI has sent PS5 Pro stock vanishing across the US and Europe, with UK buyers facing steep scalper prices.
What you need to know
- Netflix aired a 26-minute GTA 6 extended preview on 27 August, triggering a rush on PS5 Pro hardware
- PS5 Pro has sold out at major US and European retailers; UK buyers face similar shortages and scalper premiums
- The console's official UK RRP is £789.99; StockX listings are already reaching around £1,073
The PS5 Pro is selling out across the United States and Europe following a 26-minute Netflix-exclusive preview of Grand Theft Auto VI that aired on Thursday 27 August — and UK buyers are already reporting sharply inflated prices on secondary markets as the console becomes increasingly difficult to find at its official retail price.

What triggered the rush
The immediate cause is an unprecedented content partnership between Rockstar Games and Netflix. On 27 August 2026, Netflix subscribers were given exclusive early access to a presentation titled Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look, which began streaming at 8PM BST — a full six hours before the footage was published on the Rockstar Games YouTube channel at 2AM BST on 28 August.
The 26-minute video showed gameplay footage of GTA 6's two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, interacting with a range of characters including street-level drug dealers and veteran bank robbers. Crucially, Rockstar confirmed that all footage was captured directly from the game running on a PlayStation 5 console.
Netflix's VP of Nonfiction Series, Brandon Riegg, said of the arrangement: "Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we're honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first."
Within hours of the presentation ending, demand for the PS5 Pro surged sharply.
The sell-out in numbers
In the United States, PlayStation Direct — which had remained one of the last major retailers still holding stock at the $899.99 MSRP — sold out entirely by the evening of Sunday 30 August. Best Buy and Target are also out of stock, according to reports from Push Square and gHacks Tech News, with Best Buy offering only a limited number of open-box units just below the full retail price. Third-party sellers on Amazon were reportedly charging as much as $1,300 for the device.
Across Europe, the picture is similarly bleak. German retailers OTTO, Media Markt and Saturn were showing the €899.99 console as either sold out or available exclusively through third-party listings at prices up to €1,299.99, according to Twisted Voxel. Reports described the situation across European online retail as the PS5 Pro being "either sold out or significantly more expensive."
For UK buyers, secondary market data tells its own story. As of late August, PS5 Pro units were listed on StockX at a Buy Now price of approximately £1,073, with the most recent recorded sale coming in at £1,014 — well above the console's official UK RRP of £789.99.
It is worth noting that confirmed sell-outs at named UK retailers such as GAME, Argos or Currys have not been independently verified at the time of writing. The clearest evidence of the sell-out effect comes from the US and continental Europe, but secondary market pricing suggests UK supply is under serious strain.
Why the PS5 Pro specifically
The connection between GTA 6 and the PS5 Pro is more than coincidence. Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 will feature PS5 Pro enhancements, though precise details of what those enhancements involve have not yet been published. The game launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — there is no PC release date, and it will not come to Nintendo Switch 2.
Sony's own marketing for the Pro centres on performance: the console's faster GPU and PSSR upscaling technology are claimed to deliver up to 45% faster rendering in supported games compared with the standard PS5. For a title as anticipated as GTA 6, many buyers clearly want the best possible hardware in place well ahead of launch.
Analyst account ZhugeEX noted on social media that part of the supply crunch is not entirely down to fresh demand — Sony has been contending with an ongoing memory shortage that has constrained PS5 Pro production for some time. The GTA 6 showcase has simply collided with an already-tight supply situation.
Context: the price rise and what came before
The timing is particularly pointed because the PS5 Pro is already more expensive than it was at launch. Sony raised prices across the entire PS5 range on 2 April 2026, adding £90 to every model. The Pro moved from its original UK launch price of £699.99 to its current RRP of £789.99. UK PS5 unit sales dropped by around 50% in May 2026 following that price rise, according to sales data — which makes the current demand surge all the more striking.
GTA 6 itself has had a turbulent road to release. Rockstar originally targeted 2025 following the release of the first trailer in December 2023. A delay in May 2025 pushed the game to 26 May 2026; a second delay in November 2025 moved it again to its current 19 November 2026 date. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, speaking during the company's August 2026 earnings results, reaffirmed that the November date remains firm, citing "excitement around the November 19th launch" as a key factor in the company's full-year financial outlook.
What UK buyers need to know right now
- The PS5 Pro's official UK RRP is £789.99. Any price above that is a premium — either a retailer markup or a scalper listing.
- The PS5 Pro is a digital-only machine. If you plan to buy a physical disc copy of GTA 6 or any other game, you will need the optional detachable disc drive accessory at additional cost.
- GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026. Digital pre-orders are due to be available for pre-loading from 12 November 2026.
- UK pricing for GTA 6 itself has not yet been confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. US pricing is $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
- Newzoo analysts have said that without GTA 6, the games market would see no growth in 2026 — the title is now expected to drive approximately 5.1% revenue growth for the sector compared with 2025.
In short: if you find a PS5 Pro at £789.99 from a legitimate UK retailer right now, that is the fair market price. Anything above it is the cost of impatience — and with GTA 6 still eleven weeks away, there is a reasonable argument for holding your nerve.
Why it matters
For UK buyers, this is a genuinely difficult moment to be shopping for a PS5 Pro. The official price of £789.99 already represents a £90 rise from the console's launch cost — and that is before factoring in the optional disc drive accessory you will need if you plan to buy physical copies of games including GTA 6. With stock at RRP effectively gone from major retailers globally, anyone finding the console at its official price right now is getting a fair deal; anyone paying scalper rates above that is handing over serious money for the privilege of not waiting. GTA 6 does not launch until 19 November 2026, so there is still time to be patient.
