Netflix bags GTA 6 extended look six hours before the rest of the world
Rockstar Games has confirmed that "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look" will premiere exclusively on Netflix on Thursday, 27 August 2026 at 8pm BST — six hours before it goes live anywhere else. The announcement came via a press release issued by Rockstar on 6 August, with the studio also posting confirmation on X, formerly Twitter.

For UK viewers without a Netflix subscription, the wait will be considerably less comfortable. The extended look is due to land on the official Rockstar Games YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website at 2am BST on 28 August — the equivalent of 9pm ET on the 27th. Netflix, in its own announcement, confirmed that its subscribers will get to watch "six hours before anyone else."
What to expect — and why this one feels different
Rockstar has released two official GTA 6 trailers to date: Trailer 1 on 4 December 2023, and Trailer 2 on 6 May 2025. Neither showed a single second of actual gameplay. The first racked up more than 93 million YouTube views in 24 hours — a Guinness World Record for the most-viewed video game trailer in that window. The second reportedly hit more than 475 million views across all platforms in 24 hours, a figure Rockstar described as the biggest video launch of all time.
The extended look on 27 August is widely expected to change the formula. According to Rockstar's press release, the new material promises an "extended look" at the game, and given that the studio has traditionally held hands-off preview events months ahead of release, this is the most plausible moment for gameplay footage to appear publicly for the first time.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has also added a hint of intrigue, suggesting that viewers will understand the reason for the Netflix partnership once they actually watch the extended look — though he has not elaborated further.
Netflix calls it "a first-of-its-kind partnership"
Netflix's VP of Nonfiction Series, Brandon Riegg, set out the platform's thinking in a statement on its official Tudum page:
"Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right. The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto VI is unprecedented, and we're honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It's a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience."
Netflix itself described the arrangement as "a first-of-its-kind partnership." This is not the first time Rockstar and Netflix have worked together — Rockstar previously brought a number of games into the Netflix Games catalogue, including GTA titles, though those have since been removed. Red Dead Redemption remains available to play via Netflix.
GTA 6 release date, pricing and what UK buyers need to know
Grand Theft Auto VI is due to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on 19 November 2026. Rockstar has not announced a PC version. The game has moved from an original 2025 target to May 2026, and then again to November, with Rockstar citing the need for extra polish as the reason for the most recent delay.
UK pricing is confirmed as follows:
- Standard Edition: £69.99
- Ultimate Edition: £89.99 — includes an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia's story
Pre-orders opened at midnight on 25 June 2026 via the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store, and third-party retailers including Amazon, Currys and Argos. Anyone who pre-orders or buys before 20 November will receive the Vintage Vice City Pack, described by Rockstar as "a collection of items that flash back to when the neon burned brightest." Digital pre-orders also include a free month of GTA+.
One detail worth flagging for anyone considering a physical copy: the boxed edition ships with a download code rather than a playable disc. Pre-loading for both digital and physical versions is due to begin on 12 November 2026.
The game is confirmed as a current-generation exclusive and will not be available on PS4. Rockstar has given no PC release date.
Pre-order demand described as "unprecedented"
At Take-Two's Q1 FY2027 earnings call on 7 August 2026, CEO Strauss Zelnick described the pre-order performance in notably candid terms. "I can say that the level of preorders is unprecedented and astonishing, and we're very grateful for that," he said, according to Variety. "But they are so unprecedented that we just don't know how it'll translate into sales."
Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier has reported that Zelnick said pre-orders have "vastly" beaten Take-Two's internal forecasts. Take-Two has not publicly disclosed a specific unit or revenue figure.
The Netflix premiere on 27 August marks the beginning of what Take-Two had previously signalled would be an intensifying marketing push through the summer of 2026 — with the game itself due just under three months later. Netflix notes that the new title arrives 13 years after the debut of GTA V.
Why it matters
For UK buyers, the Netflix premiere creates a clear two-tier experience: subscribers get the extended look at a civilised 8pm on a Thursday evening, while everyone else faces a 2am alarm call. More broadly, the collaboration signals that the launch of a video game — even one still three months away — has become an event big enough to serve as premium streaming content in its own right. With GTA 6 priced at £69.99 for the Standard Edition, physical copies shipping without a playable disc, and the game skipping PS4 entirely, there are plenty of practical decisions still to be made by buyers before 19 November.
