Xbox Confirms Permanent Return to Console Exclusives

Microsoft has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be Xbox-only titles — marking a decisive shift away from its multiplatform era.

What you need to know

  • Gears of War: E-Day launches 6 October 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC only, priced at £59.99 — and is included with Game Pass from day one.
  • Clockwork Revolution has a 2027 release window; UK pricing has not been confirmed.
  • PS5 owners are locked out of both titles, though previously announced multiplatform games including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable will still release on PlayStation as planned.

Microsoft has formally reversed its multiplatform strategy, confirming at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 on 6 June that two of its most anticipated first-party titles — Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution — will be permanent Xbox console exclusives. The announcement drew immediate attention across the industry, not least because a PS5 version of Gears of War: E-Day had previously appeared on games ratings sites, suggesting the call to make it exclusive was made relatively late in development.

Gears of War: E-Day, confirmed as a permanent Xbox console exclusive, launches on 6 October 2026 — with no PS5 release planned.

In an official post on Xbox Wire, the company was unambiguous: "Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will be Xbox console exclusives. These are not timed exclusives." It also confirmed that games already announced for multiplatform release — including Halo: Campaign Evolved and Forza Horizon 6 — would continue to arrive on other platforms as planned.

The shift in strategy under new leadership

The announcement came under Xbox's new CEO, Asha Sharma, who took over from Phil Spencer following his retirement on 23 February 2026. Spencer, who had been at Microsoft since joining as an intern in 1988, had championed the "every screen is an Xbox" philosophy that drove the multiplatform push. Sharma's tenure has moved quickly in a different direction: among her early moves were announcing next-generation console Project Helix and shelving the "This is an Xbox" advertising campaign.

Sharma addressed the reversal directly on social media on 6 June: "We want people to choose Xbox because of great games and experiences. That also means giving you something that was made for Xbox."

Chief Content Officer Matt Booty, speaking to Variety after the showcase, framed the new approach as a matter of rewarding loyalty: "We want to give Xbox players a reason to believe in Xbox, a reason to buy an Xbox, be an Xbox fan. We also want to reward the people who've been with us and have been loyal. So we're doing one this year in 2026, going to do one next year in 2027, and then we're going to continue to think about it going forward."

The news was reportedly kept tightly under wraps within Microsoft itself. Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball, speaking to GamesRadar+, acknowledged: "It's true that the news was a surprise to a lot of people in the company; that's because we wanted it to be a surprise to players."

Gears of War: E-Day — what UK buyers need to know

The more immediate of the two exclusives is Gears of War: E-Day, which launches on 6 October 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. Set fourteen years before the original Gears of War, it follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago at the moment the Locust Horde first erupts from underground. Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game supports campaign co-op, split-screen co-op, and online play for up to four players.

The Standard Edition carries a UK RRP of £59.99. A digital-only Premium Edition is also available, offering five days of early access starting 1 October 2026. A Collector's Edition — available for Xbox Series X (physical disc) and Steam (digital token) — also launches on 1 October, ahead of the global release. Pre-ordering any edition grants access to the Open Beta running from 6–10 August 2026, along with the Exfil Dom Character Skin and Exfil Weapon Skin Set at launch.

Crucially for Game Pass subscribers, E-Day will be available on day one via the service — meaning no additional purchase is required.

Clockwork Revolution — confirmed for 2027

Developed by inXile Entertainment, Clockwork Revolution is described as an ambitious first-person shooter with a confirmed 2027 release window for Xbox consoles and PC. UK pricing and a specific release date have not yet been confirmed.

What isn't changing

Microsoft has been careful to draw a clear line between its new exclusives strategy and the multiplatform commitments it has already made. UK PS5 owners waiting for Halo: Campaign Evolved — the first mainline Halo title to release on a PlayStation console, due on PS5 on 28 July 2026Fable, and Forza Horizon 6 should still receive those titles as previously announced. Live-service titles, including Call of Duty, will remain multiplatform due to binding agreements tied to Microsoft's Activision Blizzard acquisition.

Booty noted that while single-player games being console exclusive is a "good rule of thumb," it is "not an absolute."

More exclusives on the way

Matthew Ball indicated that E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are only the beginning. "I can assure you, Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution are not the only titles we're planning," he told GamesRadar+. "To grow a platform like ours, you have to have exclusive games and services." Which additional franchises from Microsoft's catalogue — Booty noted the company is "steward of over 20 game franchises that have made a billion dollars in their lifetime" — might be earmarked for exclusivity has not been announced.

The broader picture is complicated by ongoing turbulence at Xbox. In early July 2026, Microsoft cut 1,600 jobs across its gaming division, with studios including Double Fine and Compulsion Games going independent. A further 1,600 layoffs are projected. Whether the renewed exclusives strategy can stabilise Xbox's position in the UK market — where PlayStation holds a commanding lead — remains to be seen.

  • Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta: 6–10 August 2026 (pre-order required)
  • Collector's Edition / Premium Edition early access: 1 October 2026
  • Global launch: 6 October 2026 — Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass
  • Standard Edition UK RRP: £59.99

Why it matters

For UK buyers who already own a PlayStation 5, this is the first genuinely compelling hardware argument Microsoft has made in years — if you want to play Gears of War: E-Day at launch, you need an Xbox or a gaming PC. Game Pass subscribers get the clearest deal: the flagship exclusive arrives on day one at no extra cost, making the subscription more valuable overnight. PS5 owners who were banking on an eventual Xbox port should note that Microsoft has explicitly stated these are not timed exclusives. Meanwhile, the broader signals from new Xbox leadership suggest more exclusives are coming — though which franchises are in the pipeline has not yet been disclosed.
